This shoe features a square shape instead of a curve, allowing for a wider gripping area for flip pitchers than a traditionally shaped shoe. Donaho in the mid 1980's, the Cal-Flip was the first shoe specifically designed
for the flip pitch. Pete was a top flip player in the Western US and he wanted a
shoe that would land "cleats down", giving him the same gripping and stopping
advantages as turn throwers have from the specially designed cleats on a

The almost instant success of the diamond-shaped, waffle-like grip on the new Alan Francis All-On horseshoe immediately spurred requests for the same thing on a flip shoe.
